Tragedy Started With Her Birth

Meena Kumari was born on 1 August 1933. It is said that the tragedy of her life started with her birth. Meena Kumari’s father Alibaksh was a Muslim and mother was a Bengali Christian. Mahjabeen was the name which was given by her parents. Meena Kumari’s father wanted his second child, a son, but Meena Kumari was born.

Her father was very sad. There wasn’t any money left in his house. So, he left new born Meena Kumari outside an orphanage. But later her father brought the girl back in his lap and tragedy of her life started from here.

Started Acting at Early Age

Due to poor financial conditions at home, Meena started acting at the age of just 7 years. His first film was “Farzad-e Hind”. After this she also worked in Annapurna, Sanam, Tamasha and Lal Haveli. But the film “Baiju Bawra” took her to the heights of fame. This film was released in 1952. After this film, Meena kept climbing the stairs of success.

Hit On Screen Chemistry

Meena Kumari’s pairing was most successful with Bollywood actor Ashok Kumar. The audience loved the chemistry between the two. Both of them worked together in many films. Her excellent acting ability can be gauged from the fact that she has won the Filmfare Award for 4 times in her film career.

Meena’s stepson Tajdar Amrohi had revealed in an interview that he liked his younger mother so much that he told her that if he had not been so young, he would have married her. When Baba heard this, he started smiling.

According to media reports, Meena Kumari started working in films from childhood. Later she became a successful actress. Meanwhile, Meena Kumari had fallen in love with filmmaker Kamal Amrohi. But experts say that Meena Kumari’s father was strictly against this relationship. 

In such a situation, Meena Kumari secretly married Kamal Amrohi against the wishes of her family. However, it was not easy for Meena to work in films after marriage. It is said that Kamal imposed many restrictions on Meena. 

The relationship between Meena and Kamal was full of ups and downs. It is said that Meena and Kamal had attended an event. Meena had forgotten to keep her purse here.

Meanwhile, when another actress saw Meena Kumari’s purse, she went to return it. This actress told Kamal that I saw that you had seen Meena’s purse kept on the seat still you didn’t pick, why so? On this, Kamal Amrohi gave a curt reply and said that today I will pick up the purse, tomorrow I will have to pick up the slippers, so I did not pick it up. Hearing these words of Kamal Amrohi, not only the other actress but also Meena Kumari was shocked.

Physical Violence With Meena Kumari

Even after marriage, Amrohi allowed Meena to work in films. But many conditions were also placed before her. Meena Kumari had accepted these conditions, but she was also very fond of breaking them. Amrohi always looked at Meena with suspicion. 

According to the biography written by Vinod Mehta, Meena Kumari was physically abused by her husband. She had also been a victim of this during her marriage. Amrohi never accepted this. But Meena Kumari’s close friend actress Nargis had also talked about this many times.

After a few months of marriage, fights started between the two. Kamal did not like Meena working till late night. Besides, he also used to impose restrictions on them. During the interview, Kamal’s son Tajdar had revealed that he had put many conditions of marriage before Meena, like she would return home before 6:00 pm, cannot wear revealing clothes, would not go out with any co-star. Nor will she sign any new film.

Due to the restrictions imposed by Kamal, Meena started feeling like a prisoner in her life. People also started calling her ‘Pinjre ka Panchhi’, after which she expressed his desire to work in films, but Kamal allowed her to work on the condition that he would first read all the scripts of her film. The fights between the two increased and finally in 1961, both of them separated after divorce. However, even after divorce, Meena continued working in amazing films.

Meera Kumari and Alcohol Addiction

Meena Kumari had become addicted to drinking alcohol. Due to excessive drinking, her condition worsened and she fell to a serious illness. It is said that in her last days when she was alone, she realized her mistake and apologized to Kamal Amrohi. 

Kamal also forgave her, after which she completed the shooting of the film ‘Pakeezah’, but only a few days after the release of the film. Meena Kumari died because of liver cirrhosis.

Famous actress Nargis wrote a letter to her friend Meena Kumari after her death. She wrote that,

‘Meena, happy death! Congratulations on your death! I have never said this before. Today, Meena, your friends, congratulates you on your death and asks you to never step into this world again. This place is not for people like you.

Biopic Film on Meena Kumari

Kriti Sanon will be starring in a biopic about the life of Meena Kumari, which will be directed by Manish Malhotra and produced by Bhushan Kumar. The film is said to be a tribute to the legendary actress.

In July 2023, Manish Malhotra confirmed that he will be directing the biopic and that they are currently working on the script. Meena Kumari was a famous Bollywood actress known as the “Tragedy Queen”. There have been previous films dedicated to her, such as “Meena Kumari Ki Amar Kahaani” and “Shaira”.

In 2015, it was reported that Tigmanshu Dhulia was to make a film on Meena Kumari’s life, but it was shelved due to lack of authentic facts and after a strong protest by Kumari’s stepson Tajdar Amrohi. In 2020, Almighty Motion Pictures announced a web series on Kumari’s life which is to be based on the book.
